Witnessing change and growing as a photographer

Autumn of 2020 found us in a local lockdown followed by a set of national restrictions that severely limited movement. My plan for the local lockdown was to capture the waterfalls and waterways of the county where I live, as it was soon followed by stricter rules, I was unable to get around to discover all the new places I had set out to find.

This time of year usually sees me running around mountains looking for dynamic and moody weather brought in by the ever increasing westerly storms. Not being able to get out, I was restricted to my local woodland, hanging out with my camera and a very patient dog. This year there was no getting out of breath hiking up the steep peaks in Snowdonia or sitting in the rain on a ridge waiting for the storm to break. This year was slower. Slow gives you time to think and time to notice change; something I don’t ignore but definitely something I don’t notice the details of.

This year I saw the change vividly. I saw the first green leaves become yellow. I saw the first ochre-coloured leaves accumulate on the ground. I saw an array of fungi appear and no sooner than they arrived disappear. I saw the first storms blow through and strip the dying foliage from the trees. Now I see bare trees and the foliage accumulated on the ground slowly decay as winter sets in.

Witnessing this change inspired to take new images and collate the random shots of autumn I’d taken in the past into a bit of body of work. Albeit a small one. There are a mixture of styles and techniques in the collection, similar to the variability of the season itself.

The experiences I’ve had this season have helped me produce probably one of the best Images, in my opinion, I have taken. It’s up to you to decide which one it is!!

Until next time here are my three favourite images from this autumn for you to enjoy and a link to the new gallery on my website. The gallery is a living beast and I will be adding more images to it in the coming weeks and over time, so keep checking back to see the updates.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the collection and what you enjoy about the images.
